Hopsin is obviously Internet savvy.
The L.A. rapper has made a name for himself in recent years with his brainless braggadocio, ice-white contacts, and videos appealing to a plugged-in LCD audience of skateboarders and gamers. The 29-year-old (yep) expands on this every-dude persona with his “Ill Mind of Hopsin” series featuring lyrics about disenchantment, jaded youth culture, and religion. However, he’s sent out the biggest shockwaves with the oldest technique in the book: beefin’. Firing jabs at Odd Future, Drake, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco (“he can’t even ollie”) and Tomica Wright, owner of his ex-label Ruthless Records, it’s a no-brainer that Hopsin counts Eminem as a major inspiration.
In his latest lame duck effort at spreading the love to an army of followers like The Based God, Hopsin shared his phone number on Facebook and told fans to call or text him. Apparently the incoming results weren’t enough for his fragile ego, so he hopped back in front of the webcam and posted another video to prove it was truly him picking up and responding with party ghost emojis. Quick stats that followed: 2.5 million views, 60,000 likes, 365,869 text messages, and a phone bill of $6,120. Oops! The number has since been disconnected, but not before one final over-share.
