Kingston, Ontario isn’t always thought of as a musical hotbed. Most will note that it doesn’t have the muscles of Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver, cities exponentially bigger than the little university town at the mouths of the St. Lawrence River and Rideau Canal. But while each of those cities has its own ‘thing’ going for it, so does Kingston, and when Kingston gets its shots in, it makes them count. The Tragically Hip. Bryan Adams. Even the goddamn Headstones.
Next in line you’ll find Kasador, the five-piece indie dance-rockers blasting out of the Queen’s University ghetto. Formerly known as Will Hunter Band, the quartet has made an advantageous home in Kingston; when Canadian rock royalty comes through, Kasador is usually seen kicking off the show. A who’s-who of northern favourites, including Wintersleep, Arkells, U.S.S., and July Talk, have closed for the hometown heroes. They’re celebrated on local festival bills, including stints at the long-running Wolfe Island Music Festival (run by Kingston’s legendary supporter of CanCon arts, Virginia Clark). They recently released their self-titled debut EP, a smokey, gin-drenched six-song tour of life in a small-ish city.
The video for sultry opener “Talk About It” finds a [mostly] black-and-white Kasador jamming through the track, a tongue-in-cheek poke at the very grey matter of the song; a lack of communication and understanding bringing a relationship to a bitter demise. Beautifully directed, shot and edited by Brett Pedersen, the video is a keen and inviting intro to the band and what they’re all about; heartbreak wrapped in a four-on-the-floor, glitzy yet gritty banger; a dance floor anthem for a dive bar. We’re premiering it exclusively today, and we could not be more excited.
Expect more from the Kingston outfit as they head out on tour.
