If a stage production of nautical nonsense is something you wish for, well, you’re in luck.
Directed by Tina Landau, the SpongeBob Squarepants musical will hit the Broadway stage for preview performances on November 4th at the Palace Theatre, ahead of its opening night on December 4th. The show will feature original music from a huge range of musicians, including David Bowie, T.I., Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At The Disco, The Flaming Lips, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
The SpongeBob musical had its world premiere in Chicago last year, and the show’s book concerns the undersea village of Bikini Bottom being threatened with total destruction. The cast includes Ethan Slater as SpongeBob SquarePants, Gavin Lee as Squidward, Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks and Danny Skinner as Patrick. Aw, I guess Will Sasso had scheduling commitments, because he’d make the perfect Patrick.
Believe it or not, this won’t be the first time David Bowie will be associated with the world’s most popular Tom Kenny-voiced man-child sea sponge: he voiced a character in the 2007 episode “Atlantis SquarePantis”:
As long as the musical will feature a real-life performance of “Sweet Victory”, we’ll be set.
