Whether it’s as a well-meaning down-and-outer in Reqiuem For a Dream or a Spring Breakers-esque take on the Joker, Jared Leto has spent most of his career playing characters that look like the kind of dude you’d pick up on the side of the road. And now, thanks to a characteristically weird PR stunt in advance of 30 Second To Mars’ latest album, the next hitchhiker you see might actually be Jared Leto.
“It’s a pretty big adventure. I’m going to hitchhike, among other things, across the country from New York City to Los Angeles”, Leto revealed last week on an episode of On Air With Ryan Seacrest, in what he is calling “Mars Across America” (ugh). This is Jared Leto we’re talking about here, which means not only does he plan to hitchhike across the country, he plans to go about hitchhiking in the most Jared Leto way possible: “I’m going to jump on a donkey in the Grand Canyon or take a hot air balloon”, he muses.
Leto’s already left New York after a meet-and-greet in Times Square and performances in both Penn and Grand Central Stations. His next stops are Cleveland and Chicago, apparently, so if you’re currently in the Midwest, don’t be too spooked in you see a Johnny-Depp-as-Willy-Wonka cosplayer sticking their thumb out on the shoulder of the highway.
