Though the annual “Song of the Summer” showdown may be a cultural constant, the attitudes and ideals of culture itself most certainly are not. Though we’re lucky to live in a time when dialogues of inclusivity and social improvement are arguably more open than ever, all it takes it one look at the hits of summers past to realize that well, it wasn’t always like that.

Whether it’s the old-school ignorance of Aerosmith’s “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” or the shockingly-recent success of songs such as “Blurred Lines”, the lineage of the summer song offers a map showing a surprising path of progress in our cultural values.
