The original 1997 Tamagotchi is about to get a re-release

The new (or rather, old) model hits stores later this year.

September 11, 2018

Just when you thought you couldn’t get any more distracted, Bandai announced that they’re offering a 16-bit blast to the past with the (re)release of its original Tamagotchi model back from 1997.

The throwback comes after Tamagotchis were rebooted onto store shelves back in 2017, albeit in an updated new look that had nostalgia-hungry millennial fans “clamoring for the original”, according to Bandai. The new – or rather, old – Tamagotchi will be return to store shelves with its O.G. design and packaging from 21 dang years ago, but Bandai are throwing eight new device colours into the mix for those who like to mix a little new-ness into their throwback cocktails.

For those looking to relive the childhood anxiety of sneakily taking care of your Tamagotchi – only this time hiding from your boss, not your teacher – or if you’re just looking for a non-shedding pet option, the first generation of these old-school Tamagotchis will be ready for pre-order of September 30th, 2018, before being released into stores later this year.
