If it weren’t for the Academy Award nominations (and win), Dior campaigns, and famous former beaus like Nicholas Hoult, Chris Martin and Darren Aronofsky , Jennifer Lawrence would be just like us. Okay, she’s probably a million times funnier and more glamorous than you or I will ever be, but whether it’s her impressive onscreen acting chops laid-back IDGAF attitude in interviews and on red carpets, there’s something about her that draws us in.
She can wow in films that range from meth-riddled indie dramas to top tween franchises to blockbuster superheroes series to rom-coms to ‘70s heist flicks to spy thrillers like the upcoming Red Sparrow — and then the acting stops and we just want to be her best friend. Sure, J-Law has taken heat for unconventional roles and pranks gone awry as of late, but her gutsy streak is just one of the many qualities that make her all the more endearing. Here are just some of the other reasons to show Lawrence some love.
Her performance in Winter’s Bone
Lawrence first caught mainstream moviegoers’ attention after getting nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2010’s Winter Bone. It tells the harrowing story of a young woman taking care of her siblings in the Ozarks, while trying to track down her dad before their house gets repossessed. Dark and gritty as the plot may be, the young Lawrence’s stirring performance proved a beacon of light and introduced the powerhouse actress to a wide audience.
She’s unabashedly obsessed with the Kardashians
Say what you want about Kris Jenner and her clan, but there are few guilty pleasures more indulgent than binge-watching the drama-filled family on Keeping Up with the Kardashians (and gaining a new appreciation for what you thought was your own dysfunctional family). Lawrence would never deign to call it a guilty pleasure, though — she’s a loud and proud Kardashian stan. She even got to interview the one and only Kim Kardashian West during a guest-hosting stint at Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year. She introduced Kim K by announcing, “I have been obsessed with [her] and her family for over a decade in a very very healthy way.” Things only got more hilarious from there.
She’s the female action hero girls rarely get
Thanks to J-Law, there’s now a generation of young women who grew up getting to watch bad-ass female leads in blockbuster franchises like The Hunger Games and X-Men. Who needs another regurgitation of Batman or Superman when you’ve got Katniss Everdeen and Mystique?
She doesn’t make walking in heels and elaborate poofy gowns look easy (because it isn’t, people!)
At just 22-years-old, Lawrence became the second youngest leading lady ever to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards in 2013. In the shock of the moment, wearing a gorgeous but not super practical Dior dress, she fell up the stairs to the stage in a moment that has basically become as iconic as the Oscar win itself. Thankfully, she was able to laugh it off pretty quickly — and good thing, too, because she fell again on the Oscar red carpet the following year.
But she can portray emotional AF characters too
In addition to captivating young adult audiences, Lawrence has also earned her spot amongst Hollywood director’s most desired talents. David O. Russell was particularly keen on Lawrence, casting her in his back-to-back-to-back films Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. Despite the range of characters, Lawrence managed to steal all of her scenes in all three pictures and earn Oscar nominations for each one of them. She took home the Best Actress trophy for playing an erratic grieving widow in Silver Linings Playbook.
She ditched VIP Golden Globe soirees to hang out with her BFF
Given her shaky record at Hollywood galas, it’s not too surprising that Lawrence is more than happy to kick back at home rather than strutting down a red carpet. And that’s exactly what she did after the Golden Globes last month. In a Facebook video that has since gone viral, Lawrence revealed that she and BFF Emma Stone ditched the afterparties to chill at home — but only after her glam team had gussied up half her face. The reveal of her half-painted face (captured by Stone on camera) is priceless, and proof that she’s definitely the fun, goofy friend of her group.
She picks ballsy roles
The reviews for last year’s Aronofsky-directed experimental thriller mother! were mixed to say the least, but even though the film suffered audience walk-outs, Lawrence came away from the project pretty unscathed. In fact, many critics praised her performance in the polarizing flick. Love mother! or hate it, we think having the guts to go out on a limb and try something different is always impressive.
And that’s precisely why we can’t wait to see J-Law steal the spotlight once again in the upcoming spy thriller Red Sparrow. It hits theatres on March 2.
