Over the weekend, Frank Ocean materialized dreams when he hosted a party inspired by Paris is Burning — the iconic 1990 documentary on New York black and latinx ball culture — for his 30th birthday. This isn’t a false alarm and the internet is oozing with proof that it happened (alongside an all-star list of attendees).
It’s not the first time Ocean has showcased his love of cinematic depictions of ball culture — an LGBTQ tradition where participants compete against one another based on vogueing, costumes, appearance and attitude. On his visual album Endless, Frank Ocean sampled a voice clip from ballroom legend, Crystal LaBeija, from the 1967 film, The Queen.
Adele, SZA and Aminé were all at Frank’s “House of Ocean” and there are rumours that Brad Pitt was also in attendance (ICYMI, the two developed a serious relationship when Pitt admitted that he got over his divorce by listening to Ocean’s music and Frank Ocean later serenaded Brad Pitt on stage during FYF in 2017).
SZA was there serving up poses.
Tyler the Creator’s walk is EVERYTHING.
Aminé was winged eyeliner goals
Adele also offered a very fabulous birthday greeting
If you need an extra push, Ocean’s essay on life in 2017 is pure and unbridled life-giving light — so was his walk.
In case you need an education, you should watch Paris is Burning. Like, immediately.
