It’s difficult to think of any of the women slaying between genres, from Rico Nasty and Tina Turner, to Brittany Howard and Valerie June, existing without the omnipresent influence of the extraordinary Betty Davis. Famously elusive, even as the rest of the world has finally caught up to her role in shaping the perception of black women in music, among the things to celebrate in 2018 is an inside look into the Queen of Funk herself. The work and impact of funk queen Betty Davis is commemorated in Philip Cox’s new acclaimed documentary Betty: They Say I’m Different and A.Side would love to hook you up with a chance to be in attendance at its Toronto premiere.
Betty Davis’ original band Funk House will be in attendance and will perform alongside Toronto funk stars SATE, Ammoye, Shakura S’Aida, Mamalia and Nicky Lawrence. There will also be a pop-up funk/soul record shop presented by Sonic Boom while Sean Sax and General Eclectic spin selections before and after the show.
