The story of hip-hop is one that twists and turns. From its birth—a child of dancehall, soul and disco, sprouting from pavements in The Bronx—to its countless deaths and rebirths, to becoming the most ubiquitous and successful form of music across the globe, the narrative has always been engaging. Countless characters have shaped this rich cultural ongoing history and a few of them have been recognized in the second book of children’s book series Hip-Hop Alphabet by writer Howie Abrams and illustrator Michael “Kaves” McLeer.
Riding the wave of success of the first book, Hip-Hop Alphabet 2 takes a bit more of a contemporary angle with the inclusion of a few current stars next to a few legends. The Abrams’s catchy rhymes against Kaves’s graffiti style illustrations also double as a reference to the genre in itself, further capturing the hip-hop essence. Further on, proceeds from book sales will go to the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music which supports arts and music education in under-served schools and communities.
The book was released on May 14 but you can also try entering the contest below for a chance to win a copy.
