Watch Busty and the Bass grow from McGill band to Rock Your Campus winners

February 13, 2015

Last year, CBC Music and TD Music launched a contest with a simple mandate: To find the best Canadian band on campus. After several months, thousands of votes, and countless band applications—OK, there were actually 200 of ’em—one winner emerged, and that band was McGill University’s Busty and the Bass. A polished blend of motown, soul, jazz and hip-hop, the band sounded like something you’d hear coming from Montreal’s now-defunct Le Swimming club, and thanks to a polished campaign (and an even more polished sound), the band coasted to victory, eventually opening for Hamilton, ON indie-rock act The Arkells.

But if their horn-laced music sound smooth, their ascension was anything but. From a ground-level sticker campaign to a strategic EP release, Busty and the Bass put in the work to win Rock Your Campus—and the documentary below documents the band’s upswing. This is only the first half of the doc series; the second one lands here on February 13.
