Shawn Mendes might still be south of 20—the 19-year-old from Pickering, Ontario was just named as one of Tiger Beat’s 19 under 19 icons—but he’s been making waves for himself since his first breakout single, “Stitches.” Since then, he’s signed with a major label and opened for names like Taylor Swift and the legendary Mariah Carey.
Now it seems like Mendes is creating his own history. With “Stitches,” “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” Billboard just reported that the Canadian singer is the first artist in 56 years to have three songs reach number one before the age of 20.
This isn’t the first time Mendes has flirted with record-breaking success. His debut album, Handwritten, reached the number one spot when it was released, making Shawn Mendes the first artist to do that since Justin Bieber.
