PREMIERE: “Tokyo” music video by RYAN Playground

June 6, 2018

RYAN Playground's new music video for "Tokyo" is a lesson in being your own anchor.

A triple threat in her own right,  Montreal-based artist Genevieve Ryan Martel (who operates under the moniker RYAN Playground) handles production, vocals and songwriting on her music. The daughter of two classically trained musicians, Martel received her first drum kit at age five and has since become a global tour de force, receiving widespread acclaim for her Elle EP, released via Ryan Hemsworth’s Secret Songs imprint, and modelling in campaigns for Vera Wang, Miyake, Elle and Rudsak.

Her new music video for the track “Tokyo,” is fearlessly brazen in its intimacy, collecting together the mundane intricacies of making art while in transit. Between muted shots of Ryan sinking the perfect basket, sharing a meal with friends and settling into a good book, her motions are purposeful and measured, prioritizing agency in a way that feels like a fierce ode to self-care. Over layered vocals (the track features California-based artist Lontalius) and a quietly ascending chord progression, “Tokyo” positions innocuous actions like brushing your teeth as equally crucial as carving out time with a guitar, at its core, quietly advocating that it’s always possible to be your own anchor.

A.Side, alongside Secret Songs, is pleased to co-present a special DJ set by RYAN Playground on Friday, June 15 at The Garrison as part of NXNE. RYAN Playground will play alongside a select few of her label mates and more.
