Taylor Swift’s old albums are finally back on streaming services, and Katy Perry just dropped her new album Witness. Coincidence, or is this the ultimate shade throw? Come on, of course it’s the latter… maybe.
You might remember that back in the ancient era of 2014, Taylor Swift pulled her album 1989 from all streaming services, making news with a widely-publicized open letter to Apple Music that stated she “just doesn’t agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free.”
Today, however, it appears that Swift has softened her stance, as her entire back catalogue has returned to the full slate of streaming platforms, which her management’s official Twitter declares is a gift to fans in honour of 1989 selling over 10 million albums worldwide:
Sounds legit. Just a pop star realizing the absolute juggernauts digital streaming corps have become, and that withholding her material from their clutches is tantamount to slow career suicide, right? Well, maybe that’s the case – but, as many are saying online, the timing is particularly interesting, as today is also the day Katy Perry released her new album Witness.
In case you forgot, Swift told Rolling Stone that she’s “straight up enemies” with another pop star back in 2014, and that adverse relationship was the inspiration behind the single “Bad Blood.” The other star in question is widely believed to be Katy Perry, and the impetus behind their strained relationship was apparently the fact that Katy Perry “stole” touring backup dancers from Swift.
Perry’s latest single “Swish Swish” takes aim at an unnamed “joker,” who will soon “kiss the ring,” lyrics that pretty impossible to believe are aimed at anyone else but Perry’s most widely-rumoured enemy.
Many fans believe Swift’s return to streaming platforms is a move designed to take attention off the release of Witness:
taylor swift's the kind of person who'd go into labor at someone else's baby shower or announce her engagement during someone else's wedding

I have no loyalty with any artists on music but after what Taylor Swift just did, I'm listening to Katy perry's new album.

Still, maybe it’s a total coincidence?
