The Aaliyah-inspired cosmetic line is launching this summer

The cultural aesthetic that ran through the late 90s and early 00s had its fair share of head-scratching style choices — from the frosted tips of now-forgotten boy bands to Britney and Justin’s denim-fuelled love affair – but one style icon from that era who’s remained both influential and contemporary is Aaliyah, and now cosmetic giants M.A.C. are planning to honour her legacy of hip-hop haute-couture with a collection inspired by the queen herself.

Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, her cultural take-over began in 1994 with the release of the her first of three platinum-certified albums, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, and she was at the beginning of a promising acting career that was tragically cut short in 2001 by a fatal plane crash. M.A.C. promises to commemorate her enduring legacy of “90s-glam”, posting an announcement over Instagram stating “Aaliyah lives on in a makeup collection influenced by her groundbreaking work in music and film”.

The release comes in response to a successful change.org petition from three years ago, which counted signatures from Aaliyah’s brother and Missy Elliot among its 26,213 supporters. The collection is due to hit shelves June 20th, and to get fans excited, M.A.C. released a sneak preview of what’s in store, including a brown nude lipstick and an eye palette of “sultry hues”:
