Ultra-talented Oklahoma Thunder point guard and Taylor Swift superfan Russell Westbrook took home the NBA MVP trophy last night at the inaugural NBA awards, but he also received something far more precious than some hunk of metal named after a hockey administrator: he got a surprise, pre-taped congratulatory message from Taylor herself.
Warning: it’s extremely corny.

“I remember the first time you beat me at basketball and I was very upset, and you said — if you remember correctly — you said, ‘You just have to shake it off,’ and I got an idea,” Swift says in the video, telling an obviously fake story about Westbrook giving her the idea for her successful 2014 single. “So, essentially we have each other to thank for these careers! Obviously. So, that’s why I’m part of your congratulations video, because we go back, what, 20 years?”
Tay then breaks kayfabe: “We’ve never met, and that’s a fake story, but I wish it were the truth,” she said. “You are amazing! You’re the MVP. I’m so happy for you. Sending you the biggest hug ever. Congratulations!”
No word yet on whether Westbrook will commit to joining the ExTay-Ordinary League of Success-Friends, but at least we have this exclusive footage of Swift on the court 1v1 Westbrook:
Well, maybe he’ll give her some pointers. After all, this year Brodie became the first NBA player to average a triple double since Oscar Robertson did it in 1961. Fun fact: that’s 28 years before Taylor Swift was born; 29 before Russ.
