Burger King says ‘Pennywise’ from IT is free advertising for McDonalds

They tried to ban the movie... in Russia.

Everyone’s favourite extra-dimensional demon clown, Pennywise, has been shattering box-office records lately, with It earning a box office return of $553 million. Turns out, the movie-going public was absolutely starved for a decent, mainstream horror picture. That said, not everyone is on It‘s side, as Burger King has filed a claim in Russian court to get It banned from national screens.

The Russian end of the BK empire lodged a complaint that alleges Pennywise is so functionally identical to Ronald McDonald, that the movie constitutes free advertising for McD’s. Burger King claims that the “protagonist of the movie,” Pennywise, “is an exact copy” of Ronald McDonald, “including the color range and the [balloons] with which the clown lures children.” The company believes that Pennywise being so close to Ronald McDonald violates Russia’s advertising laws, which makes sense: they both end up killing children, except one takes a lot longer and uses a lot more trans fats to do it.
